BMW - Bayerische Motoren Werke
BMW started in 1916 when a factory in Munich, then the capital of Bavaria, began making aircraft engines. After World War I, it switched to the manufacture of truck and motercycle engines. Starting in 1923, the company began producing motercycles, and in 1928, automobiles. However, its start as a motor manufacturer will always be in the name, Bayerische Motoren Werke.
Their logo has its origins in World War I. When the Bavarian Luftwaffe flew planes painted in Bavarian blue and white, the view through the propeller showed blue and white segments. This inspired the stylized design still in use today.
